What is DISC?
DISC profiling system is a powerful application tool that provides us with windows of insight into the four distinct behavior and the myriad combinations of those basic styles.
* Dominance * Influence
* Steadiness * Compliance
The DISC model is based on the work of William Moulton Marston who wrote ‘The Emotions of Normal People‘ in 1928. Marston theorized that human behavior could be grouped into four quadrants or styles. People with similar styles exhibit specific types of behavior common to that style.
D – How we handle problems
I – How we deal with people
S – What pace we like best
C – What procedures we prefer to follow
What can DISC tell Us?
At its most basic level, DISC measures four factors of an individual behavior.
They can be characterized as assertiveness, communication, patience and structure. The real power of DISC comes from its ability to interpret the relation between these factors. For example where a highly Dominant person has an equally high level of Influence they will behave quite differently to an equally Dominant individual without the Influence. The factors combine like this to provide (Theoretically) around one million different ‘profiles’ (that is combinations of the four factors). Using this information, DISC can be used to describe a person’s general approach including their motivations and dislikes, strength and weakness and some of the basic assumptions they make about other people. It can also go far in helping to predict how a person will react to a specific set of circumstances
